We have successfully completed a horizontal axis wind turbine project a few days ago. You can check that project here and watch the video. Then I decided to make DIY vertical axis wind turbine which is fully operational. Yesterday I completed that project and here I am going to share my experience. Now I have created two different types of the wind turbine. Horizontal axis wind turbine and vertical axis wind turbine.

Materials Needed to make DIY Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

You need six inch PVC pipe, end blocks, Cycle rim, GI pipe, GI Plate washers, steel anglers, 12v dynamo, belt etc. First of all, you need to cut it into 2 pieces vertically. Then cut them into 60 centimeters each. Connect end blocks to both ends. You need excellent welding skill to fasten steel anglers on the cycle rim. Watch the video below to get a clear idea about everything. I used a small dc motor as a dynamo. I suggest you buy an efficient dynamo online if you seek high power output.

Instructions to make DIY Vertical Axis Wind Turbine.

First of all, I warn you not to touch electric devices if you aren’t familiar with it. Handling electrical devices, such as a drill, welding machine, angle grinder are risky and may result in accidents. So handle them carefully. Wear eye protection glasses, welding shield, hand gloves as precautions.


Step 1

You need to buy PVC pipe and cut it down vertically into two pieces as shown in the figure. We need 8 pieces of 60cm pieces of half PVC. Connect end blocks to both the ends of PVC pipe using solvents or screw. Make necessary holes on the end blocks. It will cost around $10

Step 2

Buy two cycle rim from any hardware shop. Also, buy 16 steel anglers and fix them on the cycle rim by welding. It’s better to use steel rods to weld steel anglers on a steel rim. It will cost around $15

Step 3

Take hole on two GI Plate washers and weld nuts on them. Now weld the plate washers on the both sides of a GI pipe. Now connect Two cycle rims on the GI pipe. Fix all Apparatus on a stand as shown in the video.Now is the time to connect each and every piece of PVC on the cycle rims.

Step 4

Fix dynamo and rope on the wind turbine. Place the wind turbine outside or place a wall fan in front of it. More efficient the dynamo more output you’ll get.
